Short answer: Yes. If you handle personal data - and every property sourcer does, the moment you hold a vendor's, investor's or tenant's details - you must register with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and pay the annual data protection fee. It's a legal requirement.
What is ICO registration?
The ICO is the UK's data protection regulator. Almost every business that processes personal data must pay it an annual data protection fee and be listed on its public register. For sourcers, that covers the contact details, financial information and ID documents you handle every day.
Do you need it as a sourcer?
Yes, sourcing and deal packaging both involve processing personal data, so registration is mandatory. It's separate from your AML and redress obligations; you need all of them, not one instead of another.
What it costs
£52 per year (£47 if you pay by direct debit), paid directly to the ICO.
Most sourcers fall into the ICO's lowest fee tier. The fee can be higher for larger organisations.
Do this first
Register with the ICO after you've got your data protection basics in place; a GDPR policy, and proof of training, showing an understanding of how you'll store, use and protect the data you hold. Registering is the easy part; knowing what the law actually requires of you is the part that protects you.
