Yes. If you're sourcing deals, handling client funds, or giving advice that someone relies on to make a financial decision, you're carrying risk that a standard business insurance policy won't necessarily cover. Getting the right cover in place is one of the more overlooked steps in setting up properly, largely because it isn't a single legal requirement in the way AML registration is, which makes it easy to deprioritise.
What cover actually matters here
The cover most relevant to sourcing agents is Professional Indemnity Insurance (PI). It protects you if a client claims you gave negligent advice, made an error in a deal you presented, or caused them financial loss through your work. Given that sourcing agents are often advising on significant sums of client money, this is the cover that does the heavy lifting.
Depending on how your business operates, you may also want to consider public liability cover and, if you employ anyone, employers' liability, which is a legal requirement once you have staff.
Why it matters beyond ticking a box
It protects you. Deals go wrong for all sorts of reasons that aren't your fault, but a client under financial pressure will look for someone to blame. PI cover means a dispute doesn't threaten your business.
It signals credibility. Investors and sellers increasingly ask sourcing agents whether they're insured, alongside whether they're registered with HMRC and hold redress scheme membership. It's part of the same "are you operating properly" checklist.
You meet requirements. It's not just investors that will ask to see a copy. Both redress schemes, and HMRC if they inspect you, will ask to see a copy of your relevant insurance.
